The Clueless closet app: seven real ones, and what each does

In 1995 Cher picked an outfit on a computer and saw herself wearing it. You can do that on your phone now. Here is what each app gets right, what it skips, and which one comes closest.

What Cher's closet actually did

In the film, Cher picks an outfit on a PC program that overlays it on a photo of her, so she can see how she will look. A rotating rack then delivers the clothes. The rack is still science fiction. The rest is software.

Apps copy three parts of it: a catalogue of the clothes you own, outfit ideas from that catalogue, and a picture of you in the outfit. Most do the first two well. The third is where they differ most.

Alta: the one that grew out of the film

Alta calls itself a reimagining of Cher's closet for the AI era. You photograph your clothes to build a digital closet, and an AI stylist suggests outfits. It shows them on a customisable avatar. The avatar is a stand-in for you, not a photo of you.

Pick Alta if you want daily outfit suggestions and a styled avatar. Check its App Store listing for current pricing.

Whering: the free closet

Whering is free with no subscription. Its Dress Me shuffle mixes outfits from your items, and its planner uses the weather. Outfits are collages of your pieces. Virtual try-on is announced but not out as of October 2026. It runs on iPhone, Android and the web.

Acloset: an avatar and the most tools

Acloset builds an avatar from one full-body photo and dresses it in your clothes. It also has an AI stylist you can chat with, daily outfits by weather, a calendar, packing and cost per wear. It is free up to 100 items. Paid plans start at $3.99 a month on the US App Store.

Stylebook: the old-school original

Stylebook is an iPhone and iPad closet you pay for once ($4.99 in the US, no subscription), and it needs no account. You arrange items into outfits, plan them on a calendar, make packing lists and track cost per wear. It has an Outfit Shuffle for ideas.

Indyx: a closet and real stylists

Indyx gives you unlimited items and outfits for free. Its membership is $12.99 a month, and it sells human styling: real people style your closet. It has no AI try-on. It runs on iPhone, Android and the web.

Cladwell: capsule wardrobes and a daily outfit

Cladwell suggests a daily outfit based on the weather and has templates for building a capsule wardrobe. It shows no picture of you in the outfit.

Thraed: the film's best trick, on your own photo

Thraed takes the part of Cher's closet where she sees herself in the outfit. Add one full-body photo of yourself and scan your clothes. Pick the pieces and AI generates a photo of you wearing them. With Inspire you photograph an outfit you saw somewhere and try it on yourself. It is free to download and includes 5 AI try-ons.

What Thraed does not do: it does not suggest a daily outfit, plan a calendar, make packing lists, track what you wear or have a community. It runs on iPhone and iPad only. We build it, so weigh this section the way you would any maker's.

Which one is closest to Cher's closet?

For daily outfit suggestions on a styled avatar, try Alta. For a free closet with a planner and a community, try Whering. For the most tools in one app, try Acloset. For a one-time purchase with no account, try Stylebook. For a real stylist, try Indyx. For a capsule wardrobe, try Cladwell.

For a photo of you wearing the outfit, from your own full-body picture, try Thraed. Some people keep their catalogue in one app and use a try-on app only for the outfits they are unsure about.
